Obama drops role as daughter’s basketball adviser

US President Barack Obama has acknowledged he is giving up his role as an informal volunteer coaching assistant for his 10-year-old daughter’s basketball team.

“As all of them get better, they’ll have more organized programs, they’re going to get coaches who know a lot more than I do, so I think that pretty soon I’ll be retiring to the stands,” Obama told ESPN about his duties for daughter Sasha’s team.

Obama, who has left the White House many weekends for coaching, said it was nonetheless a positive experience.

“I’m a huge believer that sports ends up being good for kids, and especially good for girls,” he said in the interview posted Monday by ESPN.

“It gives them confidence, it gives them a sense of what it means to compete. Studies show that girls involved in athletic oftentimes end up doing better in school, they’re more confident in terms of dealing with boys.”

He said he had been attending the games with his friend and former aide Reggie Love, a former star player for Duke University, and that they offered advice to the girls’ team coach.

He said he and Love saw that “girls wouldn’t know where to go, so I would go and whisper to the coach, who’s a wonderful young woman, but she’s never played basketball… we started offering our services.”

On Sundays, he said, “We have them over to a little gym over here… it ended up being as much fun as I had over the course of the last couple of years.”

Top talent defines this year’s Final Four

Lurking in virtually every corner of the Superdome this weekend will be lottery picks, some other NBA first rounders and assorted AP All-Americans.

Everywhere, that is, except the Louisville locker room.

This year’s Final Four features three teams — Kentucky, Kansas and Ohio State — all with their fair share of the most gifted players in the country, and a fourth with a coach who has squeezed the most out of the next tier of talent.

Does that make Louisville’s Rick Pitino the best coach, or say something about John Calipari, Bill Self and Thad Matta? Well, those three might tell you something about how tough it is dealing with a bench full of stars.

“A lot of coaches would agree that, at times, coaching teams with a ton of talent is probably more difficult because you’re constantly trying to get the maximum out of them,” said Matta, who has a star in AP All-American first-teamer Jared Sullinger, widely viewed as a top-15 NBA draft pick. “It’s so much easier to get to the top than stay at the top. A lot of times when you have a team that’s loaded, you fight a lot more adversity on the outside than when you’re scraping to get to the top.”

Which brings us to the Kentucky Wildcats, who play Louisville on Saturday in the first semifinal.

By choice, Calipari has developed a program so overflowing with top-level talent that he’s spending more time looking to replace players after a season or two than developing them over four.

Freshman Anthony Davis, another AP All-American, will likely be the top player in the draft should he leave after this season. Classmate Michael Kidd-Gilchrist won’t be far behind. Freshman Marquis Teague and sophomores Terrence Jones and Doron Lamb will also have a chance at the first round if they leave.

So, Calipari must be the most persuasive (some might have another adjective to describe this after those run-ins with the NCAA) recruiter in history, right?

“We don’t do anything outlandish,” he said. “We’re not promising minutes or shots. They’ve just really got to trust that you have their best interest at heart. It’s a players-first program and they learn that, as you sacrifice, we all gain, as individuals and as a team.”

Getting his players to buy into that, and to come to a team where they aren’t guaranteed to be the only star, might be Calipari’s biggest accomplishment as a coach. But once they get there, he insists he’s doing more than simply rolling the ball out on the floor.

Kentucky leads the nation in field goal defense and blocked shots and has a nearly 6-5 assist-to-turnover ratio. Stoked by this combination of less-glamorous numbers, Calipari claims he has the most efficient team in the country.

“What I’m going to try to do is get guys to play as well as they can play,” he said. “Let’s go out and play great. If it’s not good enough, let’s make sure we have more fun than anyone else and we’ll take the results from there.”

While Calipari tries to get the most out of a lot of talent, Pitino has been playing a different game this season. He is the only Final Four coach without an AP first-teamer. In fact, there were no Louisville players on the second or third teams either, or even on the honorable mention list.

According to most lists, not a single one of Pitino’s players would get drafted by the NBA if they left this year. Meanwhile, a raft of injuries and roster adjustments has turned every practice this season into an adventure. Pitino coaxed his sixth Final Four trip out of a team that reminds him in many ways of his first — an undersized, underappreciated group of players at Providence in 1987, headlined by Billy Donovan.

The Cardinals are led by point guard Peyton Siva and center Gorgui Dieng. Yet they went down the stretch in a tight game against Florida on Saturday with Siva gone from the game with five fouls and with a relatively unheralded freshman, Chane Behanan, taking over.

“We may not have as much talent in certain areas as other teams. But there’s young talent and we’re going to develop,” Pitino said. “The great thing about March Madness and college basketball is that, generally speaking, in the pros, 90 percent of the time, the best team is going to win a five- or seven-game series. In college, it’s a one-game stint, maybe somebody shoots great, anything can happen.”

Kansas has this year’s only unanimous all-AP selection in junior Thomas Robinson, who figures to be an NBA lottery pick if he leaves.

He could spend much of the night Saturday matched up against Sullinger, who sat out with back spasms when these teams met in December and Kansas won 78-67.

“He’s one of those kids that, even when he doesn’t play his best, he still gets numbers,” Self said of Robinson. “Some kids, that happens, and they get eight points, four rebounds. He doesn’t play well and he ends up with 15 and 11. It’s such a bonus when you can pencil that in for the most part.”

Players like that must make coaching easy. Calipari recognizes there are plenty of them — on all four teams at this year’s Final Four. Coaches coach, he said. Players win.

“Everyone’s talented,” Calipari said. “Yes, we have good players. So does everyone else. You think they just have a system and that’s why they’re winning? They do it because they’ve got basketball players.”

Coach Obama Reveals Basketball Philosophy

On most weekends in Washington, President Obama trades in his suit and tie for athletic pants, a ball cap and a whistle as coach of his daughter Sasha’s basketball team. And in spite of all the demands of being commander-in-chief, and campaigning for a second term, he reportedly has not missed a game all year.

“With the girls, they just think of it as dad, that is what dads are supposed to do. They take it for granted,” Obama said of the experience in an interview with ESPN’s Andy Katz.

“But what was fun, this is now the third year that the team has played together, and to see them all develop at different paces, to get better and start thinking as a team and to feel good when the team does well, to pick each other up when something is not going well, you can’t beat it,” he said, “you can’t beat the satisfaction.”

Obama said he first got involved with the team when he realized the girls’ coach – a parent volunteer who works for the National Institutes of Health – didn’t have any basketball experience.

“We’d see somebody playing a zone, our girls wouldn’t know where to go, so I would go over and whisper to the coach,” he said. “On Sunday, we would have them over to the gym over here and we’d run drills and we’d run plays.”

Coach Obama says his philosophy is to hammer home the basics – dribbling, passing and boxing out. “Making sure that they are not practicing shooting 3-pointers when they can barely get the ball to the basket,” he told Katz. “The whole theory was, don’t practice shots that you are not going to take in a game.”

The president also said that he is not afraid to be critical of his players on the court, but uses humor to soften the blow. “There were times where I would pretend to do what they were doing and the balls would land on their heads, or this is how they would rebound without jumping or paying attention to who they are supposed to be boxing out and they would start laughing,” he said.

While it’s unclear how long Obama has been coaching the team, first lady Michelle Obama told supporters in Florida last month that he “hasn’t missed a game.”  Sasha, 10, and Malia, 13, both attend the prestigious Sidwell Friends School in Washington.

President Obama and Katz also discussed the upcoming 40 th anniversary of Title IX, which mandates equal opportunity for women and girls in collegiate athletics.

“I think the challenge is making sure that, in terms of implementation, schools continue to take Title IX seriously,” Obama said of the law. “I think understanding that this is good, not just for a particular college, not just for the NCAA, [but that] it is good for our society, it will create stronger, more confident women. I think that is something that I just want to make sure everybody understands.”

“What happened as a consequence of Title IX is that the media started paying more attention to women’s sports, women’s athletics, [women’s sports] started being shown on television, it got more widespread acceptance, and I think people’s recognition that women could be just as good at competing [and] just as fun to watch,” he said.

Basketball Scout Partners with Five-Star Basketball To Maximize Reach to Coaching Community

Revolutionary iPad Scouting App from West Shore will have player data for Read Deal in the Rock, Showcase at Hall of Fame Coaches Clinic and many other Five-Star Events

Hawks beat Jazz in NBA’s first 4OT game since 1997

ATLANTA (AP) — Joe Johnson was exhausted by the time the Hawks and Utah Jazz had dragged each other into a fourth overtime — in Atlanta’s third game in three nights, no less.

“It was unbelievable,” he said. “I just had to laugh it off. I’ve never played in a game like that.”

Johnson scored 37 points, Josh Smith added 22 and the Hawks ended Utah’s six-game winning streak with a 139-133 victory Sunday night in the NBA’s first quadruple-overtime game since 1997.

The four overtimes tied for the third-longest game in NBA history. It was the ninth NBA game to go four OTs and the first since Phoenix beat Portland 140-139 on Nov. 14, 1997.

Al Jefferson finished with 28 points and 17 rebounds, and Paul Millsap had 25 points and 13 boards for the Jazz before both players fouled out in the final overtime.

“We’ll take a moral victory out of this one,” Millsap said. “This was a good ball team we played tonight. They played excellent defense. We just didn’t get it done.”

Atlanta has won four straight and six of seven. The Hawks improved to 30-20 and moved one-half game ahead of Indiana for fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

“It would happen on the third (straight night), but it shows the toughness of this ballclub to be able to push through that many overtimes and come out victorious,” said Smith, who fouled out with 1:57 left in the first overtime. “It was a special win, and I think we’ll probably appreciate this win more so than any other win during the season thus far.”

Johnson ended the first quarter with 18 points after going 8 of 8 in the period. He missed eight of his next nine shots, including a potential game-winning runner with 3 seconds left in regulation, before hitting a 3-pointer that forced the third overtime.

With 16.9 seconds remaining in the fourth OT, Johnson’s 20-foot jumper over C.J. Miles gave the Hawks a 135-131 lead.

“I got some great looks in that first quarter,” Johnson said. “I got into a rhythm early and for whatever reason it took me a little while to get that rhythm back, but other guys stepped up and made plays.”

Jeff Teague, who had 18 points and nine assists, added a pair of free throws with 13 seconds to go to make it 137-133. Johnson’s two free throws sealed the victory with 5.5 seconds remaining.

Zaza Pachulia, who pulled down 20 rebounds, hit a short jumper in the final seconds of the second quarter that gave the Hawks a 17-point lead, their biggest of the game.

Utah rallied with a 27-9 run, giving the Jazz their first lead since early in the opening period. Millsap’s 16-footer made it 65-64 with 3:23 left in the third.

Jefferson gave the Jazz their biggest lead of the game when his turnaround 12-footer made it 109-104 in the third OT, but Utah never went ahead in the final two periods.

“It’s over with,” Jefferson said. “We’ve just got to get ready for tomorrow. That’s why you get in shape. We can’t make any excuses. It was their third game in three nights. They found a way to pull it out in the end.”

The Jazz, who have won only one road game when they trailed after three quarters, fell to 7-17 away from home. They began the day as one of six teams separated by only 1 1/2 games for the final five playoff spots in the Western Conference.

Utah’s biggest lead in regulation came when Gordon Hayward’s two free throws made it 93-89 with 5:31 left in the fourth.

Hayward scored 19 points and Devin Harris handed out 10 assists for the Jazz.

Not surprisingly, Johnson was delighted when Jefferson and Millsap both picked up their sixth foul in the last OT.

“I was so happy when they fouled out, man, you wouldn’t even believe it,” Johnson said with a smile.

Obama, Cameron Take in ‘March Madness’ Basketball Game

President Obama, America’s basketball-fan-in-chief, brought British Prime Minister David Cameron to Dayton, Ohio, this evening to take in one of America’s favorite sporting events: the NCAA basketball tournament.

Obama and Cameron, dressed casually in slacks and jeans, respectively, watched courtside as Western Kentucky defeated Mississippi Valley State in the opener of the men’s tournament at the University of Dayton.

The president chatted with fans in the not-quite-full arena between plays and, from afar, it looked like the president was explaining aspects of the game to the prime minister as they sat huddled next to each other, according to pool reports.

Obama and Cameron also enjoyed another great American tradition: hot dogs.

The quick trip to the swing state was intended to showcase the “close” relationship between the two nations, according to the White House.

“What makes our relationship special – a unique and essential asset – is that we join hands across so many endeavors. Put simply, we count on each other and the world counts on our alliance,” the president and prime minister wrote in a joint op-ed in the Washington Post today.

The outing, part of Cameron’s official visit to the United States, also gave the president another opportunity to visit the key battleground state.

While Obama carried the Buckeye State in 2008, recent polls show him in a tight race for Ohio with GOP front-runner Mitt Romney.

Obama, Cameron to attend NCAA tournament game

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Basketball fan-in-chief President Barack Obama is giving British Prime Minister David Cameron a front-row seat to March Madness, taking his European partner to an election swing state for an NCAA tournament basketball game.

Amid cheers, the two leaders entered the University of Dayton Arena on Tuesday for a “First Four” matchup between Mississippi Valley State and Western Kentucky, a gesture of goodwill during Cameron’s official visit to the United States and a way for an incumbent president to reach sports fans in an election year.

Adding to the heavy hoops flavor of the day, Obama announced his NCAA tournament bracket picks to ESPN, the sports network he watches on a daily basis. On Tuesday, the network teased Obama’s selections by revealing his Final Four picks: Kentucky, Ohio State, Missouri and North Carolina.

It was the fourth straight year that Obama filled out an NCAA tournament bracket for ESPN. On the women’s side, he selected Baylor, St. John’s, Connecticut and Notre Dame to advance.

ESPN will reveal the president’s full men’s bracket Wednesday.

Cameron’s sporting tastes run more toward tennis, cricket and soccer. Tuesday’s was the first college basketball game he’s seen.

The White House said the trip to the NCAA tournament game was intended to showcase the special relationship between the two key allies during Cameron’s three-day visit. Obama and Cameron will discuss the upcoming NATO and G-8 summits on Wednesday, followed by a state dinner at the White House.

Obama and Cameron were scheduled to appear in a live halftime interview on truTV, which was airing the game, with sportscaster Clark Kellogg. Kellogg interviewed Obama at halftime of a Duke-Georgetown game in 2010 and spoke with the president later that year during a White House game of “HORSE” aired on CBS during the NCAA tournament.

Joining Obama at the game was Ohio’s Republican Gov. John Kasich, who greeted Obama with a big handshake at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Kasich gave Obama two letters, which his office said were from the governor’s twin daughters, who wanted to welcome the Democratic president to the state.

Still, other Republicans panned the trip, saying many Americans would prefer Obama to focus on more pressing issues.

“While showing off our amazing college basketball teams is great, many Americans struggling to find jobs, dealing with soaring gas prices, or concerned with our rising deficit and debt would probably like the president spend at least as much time dealing with those issues,” said Sean Spicer, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee

Obama’s quick trip to Ohio gives him a chance to connect with basketball fans and generate attention in Ohio, which he carried in the 2008 election and is considered one of the top toss-up states in 2012. The trip comes one week after Republican front-runner Mitt Romney captured Ohio’s GOP primary.

It also lets Obama lavish praise and attention on Cameron at a time of weighty foreign policy challenges in Afghanistan, Iran and Syria. Britain has been an important U.S. ally in Afghanistan and the bombing campaign in Libya that led to the removal of Moammar Gadhafi.

Cameron is frequently spotted running near his official Downing Street residence, flanked by his security detail. But he’s not much of a basketball fan; British Ambassador Peter Westmacott told reporters in Washington on Monday that Cameron was “busy briefing himself on March Madness.”

Basketball has been a big part of Obama’s life. At his Hawaii high school, Obama frequently carried a basketball along with his school books and bonded with his teammates on the court. His brother-in-law, Craig Robinson, played college basketball at Princeton and is now head coach at Oregon State.

The president regularly plays pickup basketball and keeps close tabs on his favorite NBA team, the Chicago Bulls. In a recent interview, the president said he gets League Pass on his iPad, letting him watch out-of-market NBA games on his tablet computer.

Obama kicked off the basketball season with a Veterans Day game between Michigan State and North Carolina on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson in November, enjoying a game on the aircraft carrier that took Osama bin Laden’s body to a burial at sea after the U.S. raid that killed the al-Qaida leader.

The president said in an interview last month with journalist Bill Simmons that the “mythology of sports” is deeply embedded in the U.S., allowing viewers to discern who is winning and who is losing — a principle that could easily be transferred to politics.

Volvo signs Lin to promote its cars worldwide

BEIJING (AP) — Emerging NBA star Jeremy Lin has signed a two-year contract with automaker Volvo to promote the company’s cars around the world but especially in Asia.

The Chinese-owned company said in statement Tuesday that Lin will participate in Volvo’s worldwide corporate and marketing activities as a brand ambassador.

Lin was undrafted player and cut by two NBA teams before he shot to stardom with the New York Knicks this season. He’s the NBA’s first American-born player of Chinese or Taiwanese descent.

China is a major market for the NBA. Earlier this month, NBA superstar LeBron James agreed to promote Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins ice cream in Asia.

Volvo made the announcement in New York. It says the first commercials with Lin may appear as early as June.
