Professional Basketball Athletes Rely Significantly on Chiropractic Care

Obama drops role as daughter’s basketball adviser

US President Barack Obama has acknowledged he is giving up his role as an informal volunteer coaching assistant for his 10-year-old daughter’s basketball team.

“As all of them get better, they’ll have more organized programs, they’re going to get coaches who know a lot more than I do, so I think that pretty soon I’ll be retiring to the stands,” Obama told ESPN about his duties for daughter Sasha’s team.

Obama, who has left the White House many weekends for coaching, said it was nonetheless a positive experience.

“I’m a huge believer that sports ends up being good for kids, and especially good for girls,” he said in the interview posted Monday by ESPN.

“It gives them confidence, it gives them a sense of what it means to compete. Studies show that girls involved in athletic oftentimes end up doing better in school, they’re more confident in terms of dealing with boys.”

He said he had been attending the games with his friend and former aide Reggie Love, a former star player for Duke University, and that they offered advice to the girls’ team coach.

He said he and Love saw that “girls wouldn’t know where to go, so I would go and whisper to the coach, who’s a wonderful young woman, but she’s never played basketball… we started offering our services.”

On Sundays, he said, “We have them over to a little gym over here… it ended up being as much fun as I had over the course of the last couple of years.”

Coach Obama Reveals Basketball Philosophy

On most weekends in Washington, President Obama trades in his suit and tie for athletic pants, a ball cap and a whistle as coach of his daughter Sasha’s basketball team. And in spite of all the demands of being commander-in-chief, and campaigning for a second term, he reportedly has not missed a game all year.

“With the girls, they just think of it as dad, that is what dads are supposed to do. They take it for granted,” Obama said of the experience in an interview with ESPN’s Andy Katz.

“But what was fun, this is now the third year that the team has played together, and to see them all develop at different paces, to get better and start thinking as a team and to feel good when the team does well, to pick each other up when something is not going well, you can’t beat it,” he said, “you can’t beat the satisfaction.”

Obama said he first got involved with the team when he realized the girls’ coach – a parent volunteer who works for the National Institutes of Health – didn’t have any basketball experience.

“We’d see somebody playing a zone, our girls wouldn’t know where to go, so I would go over and whisper to the coach,” he said. “On Sunday, we would have them over to the gym over here and we’d run drills and we’d run plays.”

Coach Obama says his philosophy is to hammer home the basics – dribbling, passing and boxing out. “Making sure that they are not practicing shooting 3-pointers when they can barely get the ball to the basket,” he told Katz. “The whole theory was, don’t practice shots that you are not going to take in a game.”

The president also said that he is not afraid to be critical of his players on the court, but uses humor to soften the blow. “There were times where I would pretend to do what they were doing and the balls would land on their heads, or this is how they would rebound without jumping or paying attention to who they are supposed to be boxing out and they would start laughing,” he said.

While it’s unclear how long Obama has been coaching the team, first lady Michelle Obama told supporters in Florida last month that he “hasn’t missed a game.”  Sasha, 10, and Malia, 13, both attend the prestigious Sidwell Friends School in Washington.

President Obama and Katz also discussed the upcoming 40 th anniversary of Title IX, which mandates equal opportunity for women and girls in collegiate athletics.

“I think the challenge is making sure that, in terms of implementation, schools continue to take Title IX seriously,” Obama said of the law. “I think understanding that this is good, not just for a particular college, not just for the NCAA, [but that] it is good for our society, it will create stronger, more confident women. I think that is something that I just want to make sure everybody understands.”

“What happened as a consequence of Title IX is that the media started paying more attention to women’s sports, women’s athletics, [women’s sports] started being shown on television, it got more widespread acceptance, and I think people’s recognition that women could be just as good at competing [and] just as fun to watch,” he said.

Basketball Scout Partners with Five-Star Basketball To Maximize Reach to Coaching Community

Revolutionary iPad Scouting App from West Shore will have player data for Read Deal in the Rock, Showcase at Hall of Fame Coaches Clinic and many other Five-Star Events

The partnership will enable college coaches using SportsBoardTM Basketball Scout, West Shore’s patent-pending iPad scouting and assessment application, to obtain player profile data that will then be pre-loaded in their iPads.

Basketball Scout replaces the bulky printed player packets and gives coaches the ability to enter ratings and textnotes, record voicememos, and take photos/footage for any player at these events on their iPads.

Obama, Cameron Take in ‘March Madness’ Basketball Game

President Obama, America’s basketball-fan-in-chief, brought British Prime Minister David Cameron to Dayton, Ohio, this evening to take in one of America’s favorite sporting events: the NCAA basketball tournament.

Obama and Cameron, dressed casually in slacks and jeans, respectively, watched courtside as Western Kentucky defeated Mississippi Valley State in the opener of the men’s tournament at the University of Dayton.

The president chatted with fans in the not-quite-full arena between plays and, from afar, it looked like the president was explaining aspects of the game to the prime minister as they sat huddled next to each other, according to pool reports.

Obama and Cameron also enjoyed another great American tradition: hot dogs.

The quick trip to the swing state was intended to showcase the “close” relationship between the two nations, according to the White House.

“What makes our relationship special – a unique and essential asset – is that we join hands across so many endeavors. Put simply, we count on each other and the world counts on our alliance,” the president and prime minister wrote in a joint op-ed in the Washington Post today.

The outing, part of Cameron’s official visit to the United States, also gave the president another opportunity to visit the key battleground state.

While Obama carried the Buckeye State in 2008, recent polls show him in a tight race for Ohio with GOP front-runner Mitt Romney.

Fab 14: NCAA men’s basketball tournament becomes a place for the big boys

So much for the little guys.

Instead of parlaying an historic day of upsets into a second weekend filled with small schools, the NCAA tournament now looks like a who’s-who of major college programs.

All but two of the 16 teams in the regional semifinals will be from power conferences. The lone exceptions are Xavier, which is hardly a stranger to this kind of year, and Ohio University, a big school with a small, but no longer unknown, basketball program.

According to STATS, this will be the first time since 2003 that 14 teams from the six major conferences have made the Sweet 16.

Next week’s matchups:

—No. 1 Kentucky vs. No. 4 Indiana and No. 3 Baylor vs. No. 10 Xavier in the South; No. 1 Syracuse vs. No. 4 Wisconsin and No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 6 Cincinnati in the East; No. 1 North Carolina vs. No. 13 Ohio and No. 2 Kansas vs. No. 11 North Carolina State in the Midwest; and No. 1 Michigan State vs. No. 4 Louisville and No. 3 Marquette vs. No. 7 Florida out West.

Those 14 power-conference teams have a combined 93 Final Four appearances and 33 national titles.

While two No. 2 seeds, Duke and Missouri, fell to 15s Lehigh and Norfolk State in a history-making second round Friday, all four No. 1s got through the first week safely — the first time that’s happened since 2009. A year before that, all four top-seeded teams made it to the Final Four for the only time.

It’s possible again this year, though Carolina will have to overcome an injury to a key player to get there.

The Tar Heels defeated Creighton 87-73, but point guard Kendall Marshall broke his right (non-shooting) wrist.

“You can ask any question you want, but I just told you all we know,” Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said when announcing the injury. “We do not know anything else.”

Though there are few small programs — such as the Butlers and VCUs and George Masons that have crashed the Final Four over the last decade — there will be three teams who bring double-digit seeds to the final 16.

The list starts with No. 11 North Carolina State, the program that pretty much set the standard for March Madness upsets and gave us one of the most memorable moments in college sports: Coach Jim Valvano running around the floor at The Pit, looking for someone to hug after Lorenzo Charles grabbed Dereck Whittenburg’s air ball and put it in at the buzzer for an upset over powerhouse Houston.

That was in 1983.

In 2012, the Wolfpack snuck in as one of the last at-large teams to make the field. On Sunday, they upset No. 3 Georgetown 66-63 to make it to the Midwest Regional, where they’ll play Kansas.

“We always talk about we have such great history at NC State, but it’s also time to build some new history,” coach Mark Gottfried said.

No. 10 Xavier comes from the Atlantic-10, the closest thing to a power conference without actually being one. This is the fourth Sweet 16 appearance in the last five years for the Musketeers, who made their biggest news this season with an ugly brawl against crosstown rival Cincinnati that led to suspensions and knocked the team out of whack.

“The only guys that know what we went through were the guys who were in the locker room,” coach Chris Mack said. “Some would say it’s self-inflicted, but I know we have great kids. And I’m really proud of them today.”

Then, of course, there’s No. 13 Ohio — enrolment 17,000 but with a basketball program that has, well, basically nothing in common with the better-known behemoths from the state that will join them in the Sweet 16 — Ohio State, Xavier and Cincy.

“I do think our guys have a chip on their shoulder,” Ohio coach John Groce said. “I think our guys look forward to playing on the big stage against quality competition.”

Obama, Cameron catch “March Madness” basketball game

DAYTON, Ohio (Reuters) – President Barack Obama, America’s basketball fan-in-chief, treated British Prime Minister David Cameron to courtside seats for “March Madness” on Tuesday, taking him to an NCAA tournament game in the presidential election swing state of Ohio.

The quick trip to Dayton to show off one of the country’s most popular sporting events was intended to help underscore what has long been touted as a “special relationship” between transatlantic allies, the White House said.

Obama, an avid basketball fan, whisked Cameron out of Washington to attend the National Collegiate Athletic Association game between Western Kentucky and Mississippi Valley State at the University of Dayton sports arena.

Obama chatted with fans and leaned toward Cameron at times, explaining aspects of the game. In a bit of Americana midway through the first half, the two munched hot dogs and Cameron sipped a Coke. Western Kentucky won the game 59-58.

In a halftime interview with truTV, Obama noted both teams were shooting poorly. “It may be nerves,” he said. “These are not teams that normally end up coming to the tournament.”

Cameron said it was his first basketball game and the pace was “fast and furious.” He said Obama helped him follow the action, while Obama said Cameron was going to return the favor by teaching him cricket.

“Because I don’t understand what’s going on with that cricket thing,” Obama said.

Obama’s law school alma mater, Harvard, made the NCAA tournament from the Ivy League. But he predicted Ohio State would be one of the tournament “Final Four” semifinalists.

Obama and Cameron will hold formal talks at the White House on Wednesday and the British prime minister will be honored at a state dinner on Wednesday evening.

The Ohio visit also carried a touch of domestic politics. Ohio is a battleground state in the November 6 election, crucial to Obama’s hopes of securing a second term in the White House.

The Democratic president won Ohio in 2008 but polls show he faces a tough fight keeping it in his column if matched up against Republican front-runner Mitt Romney.

At the same time, Obama had a chance to strengthen his personal bond with Cameron. When Obama visited Britain last May, the two leaders took on a pair of teen-age boys in table tennis.

Obama regularly plays pickup basketball and attends his daughters’ games. He has also made it a tradition, like millions of Americans, to predict winners of the match-ups between college teams in the “March Madness” championship tournament. The White House will soon publicize his bracket picks.

But Cameron’s visit will be about more than just fun and games. The leaders will discuss the war in Afghanistan, the Iran nuclear standoff, violence in Syria and the global economy.
